Some thoughts on a portfolio.. Was wondering what your thoughts would be on making a good core portfolio, was thinking of building a ETF portfolio and than adding some solid small - mid cap shares to the mix. As a percentage of the portfolio the ETFs would make up at least 80% while the other shares would complete the rest. Any thoughts?

Offshore ETF's and foreign small-to-mid caps!

Take top 40. Take out the dogs like plat and gold shares, single commodities companies, take out duplicates ie pick one of MTN / VOD or MDC / LHC / APN, take out construction and take out "investment holding companies", you can invest directly. That should leave you with 16 odd shares. Add two to four other high risk shares and you have a great portfolio !

you also have 20 shares - so you will need a minimum of R200k to make this work

Wes, is this how your run your portfolio? I like the idea but it seems like allot of work to get the core going. Which one to keep/take out?
