He said the government was working towards a programme in the platinum belt to create industries such as jewellery production and fuel cell technology. He did not elaborate. Fuel cells generate electric power by combining hydrogen and oxygen over a catalyst such as platinum. Davies spoke after the launch of a R150 million 4.3 megawatt thermal energy project at Anglo PlatinumÂ’s (Amplats) Waterval smelter complex in the North West. Davies said that his department was willing to provide incentives and grants, such as the R30m given to Amplats, for power production.

Not sure that Anglo is that clever. Historically they've invested significantly in attracting and retaining scares skills. Now they are cutting staff (mainly highly skilled/scares skills) at a massive rate and recruiting what they call 'thought leaders' globally (which are mainly from Australia..) at massive compensation. These so called 'thought leaders' are expected to turn around the company (similar like sending a few generals to a war zone tasking them to win the war; outcome is not difficult to predict). This will surely damage them in the medium to long term especially when the commodity cycle starts to turn (eventually). This will be an interesting space to watch....
