Fixed line is stone age yes, but in South Africa wireless services is not all that successful either, thinking of the continual line drops and interrupted internet connections on MTN and Vodacom packages for fixed installations. It may still be ok for mobile purposes but ADSL is far superior for a fixed installation. It may be the reason Telkom is still surviving since each ADSL line also provide call, fax and other data services. Our country with its densly populated areas is just not suitable for total wireless service due to limited bandwidth. Fixed line will stay for a long time to come, just like cable TV elsewhere. Telkom probably realised that and it may even be the reason for the massive upgrading of ADSL service performance recently. Let them have good management and we can see a share price shooting for the heavens. Are we going to miss the boat?
