Brutal...since 1960 somthing the way January has performed has set the tone for the year 95% of the time so unless the last days of january are spectacular this is not the bottom.

this is the sourse of the above comment it comes from the wrings of Murray Morrison The S&P500 (1416) is recording its worst start to a year since 2000 with yesterday its first up day for the year. Market myths and lores abound: most are easily disproved, but one that we do find credible is the so-called "January Barometer". This holds that the performance of the S&P500 in January is indicative of the performance over the rest of the calendar year. Since 1950, and according to the Stock Trader's Almanac, the Barometer has proven correct 91% of the time. A bad January is thus not desirable
