Does anyone know how the top 40 index movement is caluclated. Looking at the underlying shares, 9 are up at an average of 3%. The remaining 29 are down byu an estimated avg of 2,5%. Our index is 1% down. Please enlighten.

The index is weighted according to market Caps. So Anglo, BIL, Sasol, Ricnmont, have more significance than say Pick n Pay.

You can get the spread sheet with the exact weights on the JSE web site if you search long enough. The Satrix web site will also give you an idea of the weights.
