the market has increased about 500% from 1994, and we know which sector of the country owns most of the market so why are people so judgemental of the current government i dont know. they done nothing but make the rich about five times richer- so maybe zuma is the right person, maybe he could help sort out the poor and in the long run decrease the crime rate.

oh what rubbish - how does a govt. make people rich other than themselves - besides most govt. departments have become completely dysfunctional and SA no longer protects its citizens or sovereignty, Eishkom is out of spare capacity and crime thrives - 12m people are now on welfare in a "booming economy". I suppose JZ could put another 12m on welfare to "sort out the poor". Crime is out of control because it was allowed to become out of control. SA does not have the capacity or willpower to regain control. The private sector are the wealth creators, not the bureaucrats and state looters.

topgun, if a gov doesn;t make people rich - why does it matter who's in charge?

in a freemarket system, the government merely provides an enabling environment allowing the private sector to proceed with wealth creation. SA has been fortunate to benefit from the greatest global economic expansion in recent history. It has, however, not fully capitalised on that as our manufacturing base has lost market share, hence the very high levels of unemployment. The true competitive state of the economy will become evident should commodity prices decline and/or global liquidity levels recede. Most governments, in fact, act as a drag on their citizens imposing excessive taxes and regulations thereby creating stifling bureaucratic classes. As far as leadership goes, a country's citizens can merely hope that half- sensible policies are implemented.

Just a thought - but maybe a look at the entire Zuma camp versus the Mbeki camp, would provide a better view as to what will happen to the Market / SA econmy if Zuma wins. I certainly dont have full confidence in some of the Mbeki "cronies" - Tshabalala Msimang and Stofile to name two. Maybe the Zuma presidency (and by saying this doesnt mean that I support a Zuma presidency) will result in a stronger cabinet? any ideas on that?

It matters in a normal country, where there is a leading party and highly contested opposition. Each one of these will push to establish a fiscal policy that will suit the general public. As such competition is high. Here the leading party is driven by color, not by money. The National Liberator(ANC) is here to stay for ever.

this discussion could go on for ever.point is sa needs the candidate that will benefit south africa the most.jz does not fit that profile in my eyes.i think politicians take themselves more serious than they are worth.people like johann rupert, koos bekker, brian joffe, raymond ackerman have added more value to the country than any politician.my view have you seen the long term graph of the alsi, still goes from left to right in an upwards direction.Equities will always perform over a long period

push to establish a fiscal policy that will suit the general public. not true, they push policy that helps their voters, in the US this means they only care about half the population.

That's what I meant, but I still assume that there won't be voters that will be devoted for a certain party

This topic and views are very important: it creates new insight and demolish perceptions. If no definite outcomes on the questionable issues around these two individuals is aired before election day, so as to bring an end to a candidate's involvement, markets will only have to respond to the legacy of supporters of the losing candidate. Based on what we've experienced in the past from an uproar, this could culminate in a disastrous scenario. The RSA now has a democracy without hope to establish true meaning to the word. The `new' government focus on adjusting inequalities of the past (with all injustices incorporated) which has nothing to do with politics but under an umbrella of democratic principles. Powers and powers to be are based on ethnic concentration (much alike population groups who flock together). Zuma and Mbeki operate under a cloud of suspicion about the weapon scandal and Zuma is an alleged a criminal; equally corrupt is Mbeki - who is struggling to keep the pointing fingers from his involvement. All voters who still suffers from the injustices of the past and present incapacity of government to deal with 3rd world issues under a semi 1st world environment are subject to mass rabble-rousing and brain washed to vote ethnic, just to keep the unwanted (white and other) population groups out of government. It is corrupt for the ANC youth league to support Zuma; they ignore his looming cunningness to manipulate their mass support for him to lobby for the ANC presidency. The unions in this country are at present demonstrating the power of mass action and African ignorance. Nothing to lose and a lot to demolish. RSA economy is doing well, but could have done even better should the *****py elements of the ANC government be eliminated. We are being driven by the momentum of powerful economic forces... but even economic forces will be crunched to a halt because of unjustified political and egocentric social behaviour. The much covered for Manto stood up in Parliament this week to verbally give an answer to a written question, which had nothing to do with the question. When called to order she asked permission to continue with her answer even though under the circumstances it was not relevant! What form of incapacity is this? Mbeki should discontinue his career because it is heading to a grande failure for a variety of reasons; and Zuma should discontinue his march as candidate for ANC presidency because of his corrupt behaviour.

to me the problems in africa all starts because africans produce more people than jobs .This knock on effect can be felt in almost every argument.Despite the fact that africans just blame the rest of the world for their problems even though alot was from their own doing .Point is along as I am educated and have some insight there will always be opportunities for me to use cheap labour, but until the basics change africa will always be backwards.

actually I think the reason for africas Problems and lack of productivity is based in nutrition, Try for 1 week to live on suger, coke, milie meal, white bread and fatty chicken( the prefered diet of many labourers).. see if you can even get out of bed after a couple of days.. I know because I have tried it..Second point. We are supposed to be in a democracy..the point that we the people black or white have no say in who will be nominated as president is the problem. We the people should be telling the elete who we want as candidates not the other way round.

I follow your drift - but, at present you must become a member of the party (sic) to make yourself heard AND hope to grow into the hierarchy to gain a presence at the elite table. That is, if you support a ANC to be president. If not, you may source an outcry for anyone out there. Question: who's going to listen?

Imbalances are always restored. In Europe the Eastern European countries that were suppressed by socialism will get richer. In Africa RSA has to become another African state
