Hi Simon - why is the "no of shares allowed to buy" based on the ASK PRICE on not based on your bid price ?

because ask is what you pay when you buy. Unless you're getting creative with your bids, but we do not assume that.

Misunderstanding - if I have R1000 in my trading acc and want to enter a bid @ 100c for share X. This means that I can enter a bid for 1000 shares (brokerage aside). However, if the ASK price at that moment is say 120c, the "no of shares allowed to buy" will be 833.

exactly, it assumes you want to buy at the offer. If you want to put in some other bid price then you could get more. The 833 number is not restrictive, you can put in 100 at 100c, we will only rejest if you do not have enough cash.
